Idaho's Wiley Petersen Wins Round One of the PBR's Jack Daniel's Invitational

Pistol Robinson Cowboy SplashAdriano Moraes Greeting FansWiley Petersen and a Believe In Tommorow's childPistol,Adriano,WileyWiley Petersen aboard Say I Won't GunnerWiley's 91 point ride Wiley's  winning  ride.
Ft Hall's Wiley Petersen Wins Round One Of The Jack Daniel's Invitational
It was Fort Hall ,Idaho's Wiley Petersen who stole the show at the PBR's Jack Daniel's  Invitational first round on Friday night. The Shoshone-Bannock rider was picture perfect on  Hebert Bucking Bull's Start Me Up as the bull went around to the right away from Wiley's hand in a slow spin. The bull who really needed a jump start had a bad trip and nearly stopped in the spin.  Wiley was given a re -ride aboard Say I Won't Gunner. The bull went around to the left into Wiley's hand  and Wiley stayed up front on his rope with perfect free arm movement and lots of spur action with his outside foot. The bull had a lot of kick and timing and scored 45 while Wiley had the confetti flying with his score of 91.He earned $2,730 for the round.
Second place went to GA's Sean Willingham aboard the Robinson/Anchor bull Encore who took two leaps out then went around to the left away from Sean's hand with good action.Sean scored 88.25. The bull scored 43.75.Two time PBR World Champion Justin McBride made a solid ride aboard  Hebert's Handsome Jack for 88 points  while the bull scored 43.25.Handsome Jack took two leaps forward then went around to the left away from Justin's hand alternating some kick with no kick .I was not impressed with the bull and thought the bull score a little high but I don't work for the PBR as a judge so...
I had a good laugh with TN's own Brandon Gaspar about the misprint of his bull's name.G-Unit is a bull I have long said needed to be bucking in the PBR along with Brandon's bull The Game and I was happy Cody Lambert finally invited G but in the day sheet and on the video board the bull was erroneously called Gun It.Even the TV broadcasters called him that. For his first time in the big leagues G-Unit  got paired with the PBR's number 2 man in the standings ,Brazil's Valdiron de Oliveira who scored 87.75 aboard G-Unit.Personally I thought G bucked harder than Handsome Jack but both bulls  were given the same score .G spun faster than Handsome Jack and had lots of high kicks as he went around to the left in a fast spin.I'm used to seeing this bull buck riders off but then they aren't Valdiron.
Kody Lostroh tied for fifth/sixth with 87.25 aboard Berger/Struve's The Breeze. The bull was around to the left  into Kody's hand with lots of high kicks took a leap forward and reversed right. At first it looked like Kody would not get a score as the clock had him at 7.9 but he challenged it and the review judge  had him at 8.03. Pistol Robinson rode Hebert/Fournier's Cowboy Splash to tie with Kody.Pistol was picture perfect ,up on his rope as the bull went around to the right away from Pistol's hand in a fast spin. The bull only scored 43.50  and I thought that was a little low.
There were 17 qualified rides in all and several re-rides.I was happy to see Ryan Dirteater in person. This kid can ride and I wish  the Cherokee Nation would sponsor him as he is a tribal member but unlike the Choctaw ,Navajo and Seminole Tribes and Nations just to name a few  they just don't sponsor  riders.Ryan could have used more bull under him as he finished 15th in the round with 82 points while  Lights Out only scored 40.50.The bull was around to the right away from Ryan's hand .Ryan looked much better than the bull.
Three time  PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes  was honored at the start of the event and looked good although in pain .He had won an event on Thursday and then flew in.Harbinger took two leaps out  with power straight left  and pulled Adriano forward causing Adriano to slap.
I was surprised to see two time CBR World Champion/PRCA World Champion and PRCA Xtreme Bulls Champion Matt Austin here. Matt told me he had been called up as an alternate and although in previous interviews  he always said its not about the money but about  enjoying riding tonight he told me  its about the money. As always Matt was a pleasure to speak withHe also told me that he has not been riding  the way he should and hopes to be able to get back in form. He drew Jeff Robinson/Anchor Bulls' Bugs Bunny  who took two leaps out then went around to the right into Matt's hand and like Adriano , Matt was jerked forward ,slapping the bull.
The bulls ruled the event as even Guilherme Marchi fell victim to Frontier Rodeo's Fire and Flame who faked left then right then went around to the left in a powerful spin away from Guilherme's hand.
Before the event began we met several of the children from the Believe In Tomorrow Network, another  foundation  which helps chronically and terminally ill children.Patti Dittmer of the Dickson Herald  and Dee Allen, mother of bull riders Tye and Trey Allen accompanied me.Dee took pictures with my camera  and kept the scores for me while i wrote my ride commentary down.Patti whose pictures and articles can also be found on The Tennessean Online took all the Digital shots. She got some of Mike Lee and Wiley Petersen  with some of these children.Mike posed for us with Mary Nell Sparks who accompanied her cousin Phillip Orange.Phillip ,on crutches, just survived a life threatening car crash  and both his parents are still in Vanderbilt in critical condition.
The PBR had entertainment outside before the event began and honored the Air Force at the start of the event. We got to see 14 recruits sworn in and  then had four true war heroes introduced to the crowd.
It was good to see everybody.TN's own Jack Daniel's coboys Cory and Evan Rasch were there and Express ranch had them ride into the arena aboard Express Ranch's new beautiful blue  German made carriage pulled by a team of 6 black Clydesdales.
I also got to talk with Brian Canter who will be seeing the doctor Tuesday  to find out when he can return to riding. Brian is sporting a little face fuzz right now.I had to tease his traveling partner about the two of them arguiing about who was more Cherokee,Brian or J B Mauney. They did this when talking with my friend IRN reporter Carmella Scott.
It was great seeing  Adriano,Leah Garcia,Justin Mckee,JW Hart,Ross Coleman, Justin McBride and all the others who I have missed seeing. Thanks to the PBR's staff  and especially Angela for providing us with a great spot to get the best shots .IMGP6991Mary Nell Sparks,Phillip Orange and PBR World Champion Mike LeeIMGP7380Valdiron de Oliveira  on Brandon Gaspar's  G-Unit

The PBR's Jack Daniels Invitational Bucks Into Nashville,TN

The PBR Heads To Nashville,TN

Make sure you get your tickets now for the PBR's Jack Daniels Invitational to be held at the Sommet Center in Nashville,TN on August 29th and 30th. Tickets are on sale both online and through the Sommet Center's Box Office.

Remember, this is your last chance to see the great  3X  PBR World Champion Adriano Moraes  ride here in Nashville.Adriano and PBR World Champion Ednei Caminhas are both retiring after  the PBR's World Championships  this year.I urge all of their fans to come and pay tribute to these wonderful men. They are both great World Champions and great family men. Although I do not know Adriano's plans as yet(I hope to interview my friend this coming weekend) I do know that Ednei is training and showing horses in NRHA.No ,that has nothing to do with auto racing! Its the National reining Horse Association; and Ednei  is one of the best trainers and exhibitors.

The PBR has a lot in store for the fans as they open the doors early  at the Sommet Center on Friday,August 29th at 6:30 so that the fans can visit the many vendor booths in the concourse where there will be contests, promotions and lots of great souvenirs. On Saturday the 30th the concourse will be opened at 5:20 - 7:50 PM. Prior to that you can visit The Fan Zone on the corner of 5th and Broadway for a meet and greet at  3:30 PM.

As always there will be autograph signing after the event on the arena floor at 10:30.You can meet your favorite riders and even get a chance to take a picture or two.

Friday's after event party will be Nightclub PBR from 10:00PM till 1:30 PM at the Sheraton Nashville Downtown(623 Union Street) presented by Copenhagen Bull riding with activiteis from Las Vegas and Wrangler which include Las Vegas Poker tables where you can enter a drawing to win tickets to the PBR World Finals sponsored by Las Vegas. There will also be Wrangler video replays and PBR trivia contests for prizes.Admission is free but you must be 18 or older.

On Saturday the after event party will be right at 305 Broadway at The Cadillac Ranch where I might even be tempted to try the mechanical bull as my own staff  here at CWR Buckin Bulls won't let me try any of my real bulls out!

On August 30th, 2008 from 11:00 AM to1:00PM Cord McCoy and Kody Lostroh will be signing autographs  and be available for photos at Lowe's at  1301 Nashville Pike in Gallatin,TN This is sponsored by Troy-Bilt.

You can meet Wiley Petersen, the 2007 World Finals Champion; Mike Lee, 2004 PBR World Champion and L.J.Jenkins,2006 PBR Finals Champion at RCC Western Store in Opry Mills Mall from 1:00PM to 2:30PM.This is sponsored by Rocky Brands and the riders will autograph their pictures for the fans .They will also be available for your camera shots.

Meanwhile Sean Willingham and Ross Coleman will be at Boot Corral , 240 Longhollow Pike,Goodlesttsville,TN from 1:00PM to 2:30 PM  .

I just wish they had set-up an autograph session at Graham Ford here in Dickson as they had done several years back.Maybe just a hint to the powers that be that we need something in this area for their fans  west of Nashville. Maybe they could set up something in Clarksville also as that is where PBR riders Cory and Evan Rasch lived until they moved to my neck of the woods here in Cumberland Furnace which is just down the road from Clarksville. Cory and Evan have not made it back onto the BFTS tour as yet but I expect to see them back if not  after the next cut then early in the 2009 season. They are talented riders and great guys.

Cooper Kanngiesser Wins The George Paul Memorial Bull Riding

Cooper Kanngiesser Wins The 31st Annual George Paul Memorial Bull Riding While Taking The Lead In The CBR’s 2008 Standings

The George Paul Memorial Bull Riding is the oldest stand-alone bull riding event. This year the prestigious event became a part of the CBR’s 2008 season and played to standing room only crowds this past weekend. The best bulls challenged the best riders from the CBR and the PRCA; and when the dust had settled it was Zenda, KS’ Cooper Kanngiesser who stood victorious.

Records were made as during the two day event there were 15 rides which scored 90 points or above. Five of those came in the short go and they were the only qualified rides in it. That had to have kept the fans roaring.

Trent Cormier of Houma, LA won the first round with 93.5 on Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Maverick who is one of Zorro’s sons. He had to pass up his chance at the Bounty Bull Walk The Line (Bad Company) due to a minor but aggravating injury.

Super Dave Samsel (Haslet, TX) got the nod to face the Bodacious grandson because of his second place finish in the round. He rode Rich Bumbaca’s Hasta Luego for 93 points in round one. Dave who at age 37 is one of the oldest riders on tour has really seemed to blossom during the past two years as he rides both CBR and PRCA.While other riders seem to be slowing down Dave only gets better with time. Unfortunately for him Walk This Way also gets better with each out and he bucked Dave off right out of the chute with his power, rear and drop. Dave gave the crowd that great Samsel grin and told them he was still happy to be a part of this great event.

Clint Craig of Mena, AR was third in the round with 92.5 aboard Bumbaca’s Auger while CBR 2007 World Champion Bonner Bolton was fourth in the round with 92 points aboard Hurst/Dyess& Garrett’s Carney Man. Danny McDowell was fifth with 90 points aboard Alan Murphy’s Coffee Bean.

Corey Davis rode Alan Murphy’s Smokin Joe for 82.5 and Cody White rode Murphy’s Border Patrol for 81.5 in the first section.

In the second section of the round it was Cooper Kanngiesser with 86.5 aboard Bad Company’s Born To Boogie and PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox aboard Benny Cude’s Mama’s Boy for 90.

Luke Haught rode Carl Wilburn’s Chuckar for 83 while Seth Reynolds rode Scott Burruss’ Mojo for 85. Steve Woolsey aboard Lyndal Hurst’s Chino with 86.5 followed him

IIRA World Champion Bull Rider and Navajo Nation World Champion Spud Jones made a good ride aboard Mike Johnson’s McCrazy for 89.5. CBR President 4X World Champion Tuff Hedeman is really proud of Spud and sees a future World Champion of the CBR in him.

Travis Sellers rode Johnson’s Hood Figure for 89 to end the round.

Bonner Bolton rode Bad Company’s Funcky Cole Medina for 86.5 in the second round giving him the lead with178.5. That was short lived as Spud Jones took it over with yet another 89.5 ride. This time he rode Bad Company’s Pretty Vegas and had 179 on two head. Luke Haught rode Born To Boogie for 86 and he had two under his belt for 169.

Logan Knibbe made a great ride aboard Johnson’s Mighty Dirty for 92   while two time CBR World Champion Matt Austin rode Alan Murphy’s Coffee Bean for 90.5. Then it was Cooper Kanngiesser aboard Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Dirty Demon for 87 to give Cooper 173.5 on two head.

Jay Morrow rode LRR’s Top Gun for 85.5 for a solid ride. The Friday Wright scored 89 aboard Glen Southwick’s Red Eye for another thrilling ride. Trent Cormier added to his first round winning score with 86 points aboard Jesse Hill’s parachute to give him a total of 179.5 and he took over the lead.

Steve Woolsey scored 87 on Rosin’s B20 and had 173.5 on two head. Dave Samsel added to his score with another solid ride aboard Billy Jones’ Doc Holiday for 87.5.that gave Dave the lead with 180.5 on two.

Luke Kelly rode Murphy’s Hookin Bull for 88.5 while Bronson Butcher was great upon Murphy’s Mr. Incredible for 91.

The last two qualified rides of the round were Corey Davis aboard Scott Burruss’ Looney Toon for 85.5 and Douglas Duncan aboard Lyndal Hurst’s Twister for 87.5. Corey had 168 on two.

In the championship round there were five riders out of fifteen who made qualified rides and all were above 90. Cooper Kanngiesser scored 91 aboard McCrazy (Mike Johnson) to tie for 4/5 in the round and win the event with 264.5 on three head.

It was Corey Davis who tied with Cooper. Corey rode Bumbaca’s Easy Street and had 259 on three head.

Danny McDowell scored 93 when he made a great ride aboard Burruss’ Standoff to tie with Wesley Silcox for 1/2 in the round. Wesley rode Bumbaca’s Auger. The last ride was Travis Sellers aboard Murphy’s Buckshot for 91.5.

The fans really got their money’s worth will all those great rides in the short go.

When he was interviewed after winning the event Cooper thanked the George Paul family and the CBR for helping him make a dream come true. Of all the events he has won this was one of the best. Everyone wants to win this legendary event.

Bobby Paul said that the CBR’s production of the annual George Paul Memorial was the best in 20 years. The event means a lot to all riders but it has a special place in CBR President Tuff Hedeman’s heart. Tuff is one of just two riders to ever win this event three times. For Tuff this was a thrill to be able to bring the best riders and bull sin for this event.

You can see this event on RFD-TV on May21st, May 28th and June 4th. The CBR is televised every Wednesday night at 9 PM CT.

Zack Brown Comes back At Billings As The Event Winner

Zack Brown Wins In Billings,Montana
Several years ago Zack Brown's bull riding career  came to an abrupt halt when  the bull he drew at the PBR's BFTS in Billings, Montana landed on his abdomen. Zack nearly died and was in intensive care for a very long time  but  with the true grit of a cowboy, the California surfer pulled through. He did decide  during his recovery to retire from riding. That retirement lasted about a year and he returned to riding  in the CBR. Recently he was called back up to the PBR's BFTS and here he was,in Billings; and he was there  not to remember and dwell on the ride that nearly ended his life but  to win;and that he did.
Zack took the lead in round one when he tied with Brendon Clark at 89.50. he made a great ride on Tuscarora who went around to the right  away from Zack's hand with a lot of kick. Zack  was in great form and I think the judges were a little stingy. Flashover also went around to the right ,this time into Brendon Clark's hand and the race was on. In round two Zack drew Tighty Whitey who took two leaps out  before going around to the left into Zack's hand then reversed to the right away with lots of elevation and kick. Zack scored 87.50 in the round and was in eight position in it. and  had 177 on two head. This was a draft weekend and as he and Brendon were in the one/two position they had the pick of the entire pen. Again I thought the judges were stingy. In round three Zack drew  Flashover and he sure was happy as that's the bull that Brendon scored 89.50 on in the first round. Flashover has good timing and a lot of action and as with Brendon he was around to the right away from Zack's hand. I guess I just was not happy with the judges all weekend as Zack was scored 88 and finished 4th  in the round. He picked one of the wildest bulls in the draw-Soulja Boy who jerked him around every which way.He faked left then went around right then jumped out and reversed left into Zack's hand with lots of high kicks and belly rolls. It was not only a great ride but an incredible ride as Zack did everything  to keep from touching with his freehand. The "challenge " judge tried to say he touched but the  video replay showed only Zack's chin touched the bull and he got his score. If he hadn't  I would not have wanted to have been that judge. The crowd would have eaten him up alive. Zack scored 89.25 on the most exciting ride of the night and yes,the fans wanted a higher score but all in all it didn't really matter as Zack notched his first win  on the BFTS in four years. Congratulations Zack. I hope this is just the first of many.
There were a lot of good rides we didn't see in round one as  it was not shown and  there were a lot of really poor bull scores. Canadian Aaron Roy made a solid ride aboard Big Iron for 88.75 and was third in the first round. Valdiron  de Oliveira was fourth with 88.25 points on Una Bomber. McKennon Wimberley rode Bumblebee for 88 points and tied for 5/6 with Reese Cates aboard Rockin Robin. Brian Herman rode Trump Tower for 87.25 for seventh place and Josh Koschel rode Shiner for 87. Ross Coleman rode Brass Cat for 86.75 and was 9th while  Dustin Hall scored 86.50  aboard Keith to tie with Clayton Williams  on Diez for 10th /11th.
There were 23 rides in this round but there were nine bull scores under 41. with one score of only 25.75 which to me  is not BFTS material in a bull. Maybe it was the weather or maybe the bulls need a rest  with too much travel time in trailers due to having to compete in this bull team competition.Even Gold Bell Wine had a terrible trip with a score of only 35.50. Going back through archived files I have not seen  an event with such poor bull scores in past years. It was not just round one.One or two re -rides or low bull scores an event or even a round is acceptable but  to have 9 mediocre to poor performances in the first round where the riders  depend on good bulls so that they can  be higher up in the draw just does not seem fair to the riders. Round two had 19 qualified rides but there were re-rides there and low bull scores too. The worse score was Dog  Town who had a bull score of 23.That is not BFTS quality. The third round had several more bull scores in the twenties including L J Jenkins' draw of Joe Mama with a whopping bull score of 20.
One is bad enough but Ross Coleman's draw of Babe's Fireball drew a bull score of 25.50 and Brendon Clark scored only 54.75 aboard Trump Tower whose bull score was only 27. Again this is not BFTS; at least not the way it used to be when I kept touting it as "the best bulls VS. the best riders " in my columns. Personally I think the bulls are getting worn out .Even a great bull like Cooper only scoreed 40.50 in his round two out with Pistol Robinson. This was supposed to be an exciting match-up.
In round two Reese Cates rode  Hellfire for a score of 86.50 as the bull went around to the left away from Reese's hand. Reese had a good weekend and was the first to ride two head.  Reese tied for 11/12 in round two and had been tied for 5/6 in round one.
Remember this was the draft round and I guess the order of the  pick did not mean very much as  Sean Willingham who should have had the last choice  ended up with one of the last bulls left,  Blizzard,  and won the round with 89.50 . The irony of this is  that  it sure looked like a Blizzard outside as the snow came down in Billings and the riders and crew on the floor literally froze because this arena  has limited space for the bulls inside and  the doors had to be kept open.  A lot of the guys  ran out during the day and bought winter jackets and during round three even Leah Garcia wore a coat while she did  her interviews. Two riders who were ahead  of Sean were late for the draft and  lost their  turns to him. Blizzard faked right then went around to the left away from Sean's hand and Sean became only the second rider in three years to master the bull. Ednei Caminhas was the 17th man in the draft and he picked Big Coyote  out of the Berger's great bull Coyote and Ednei ended up second with 89 points as herbing bull spun to the right into Ednei's hand with lots of action .Austin Meier tied with Ednei for 2/3 in the round after his  draft pick bull Part Time had a terrible trip  and he received a re-ride aboard a bull that has been  good for a long time now Palace Station Deuces Wild. His first bull was an example of  what I mean when I say not BFTS quality. His trip would have not been acceptable at a practice pen unless he was a beginner's bull.Part Time  just loped  straight left with belly kicks  then reversed right straight along the chutes. I was surprised that PS Deuces Wild was in the re-ride pen and that  really worked out for Austin as he had been the 41st man in the draft. This is a bull if he had been in the draft  would have been among the first few picked and Austin would have never  had him as a re-ride.PS Deuces Wild had  his normal trip and the type of trip we are used to seeing on the BFTS out of a bull.He went around to the left into Austin's hand with a lot of timing, kick and drift while Austin made a good spur ride on him.
Normally the riders at the bottom of round one have little chance to advance with the draw but this week it seems  that some of them really lucked out. Right up there with Austin is JB Mauney who picked Bond James Bond who went around to the left into JB's hand with good action.JB scored 88.75 and  was 4th in the round. The next seven riders were  in the top of the draft order and did well while  Guilherme Marchi was at the bottom and picked Marcus who faked right then went around to the left away from Guilherme's hand then reversed right into it. Guilherme scored 86.50 and tied for 11/12 in the round. Don't forget its rare that number one bucks off of two bulls in a row so  whichever bull he chose he was going to ride it. Guilherme reminds me of watching Adriano when he first came up in PRCA and BRO. Nike Lee was 30th in the draw and there were still some bulls who  were decent choices ; and we all know Mike Lee will pick one who is a challenge. His pick was Perfect Poison  who took two leaps out then faked right then went around to the left into Mike's hand with belly rolls. Again here is an instant where I felt the judges were stingy and so did the crowd as Mike scored 86 on a ride that looked better than some of the higher scores in the round.
On the other hand Brendon Clark who had the first pick made a bad choice with Bad Medicine as  the bull went around to the left away from Brendon's hand with lots of power and Brendon got behind early. The bull got him leaned back on his arm and off. Zack Brown was second in the draft and he picked Tighty Whitey who took two leaps out before going around to the left into Zack's hand then reversed right away from it with lots of elevation and kick.Zack was eight in the round  with 87.25 and in the lead for the event. With a few exceptions ,a very few, those who were below number 24 in the draft  did not do well with the bulls who were left. Sometimes  it is the way they pick the bulls themselves and sometimes  its  getting a chance at ones who are only eliminators.Yes,I do not like the draft. I'm of the opinion the riders fair just as well in a regular draw and comparing draft weeks with non draft I can see no improvement. Also with   1% or less of the fans attending the Saturday morning  draft I can't see where it brings more interaction or interest in for the fans. Lets go back to Cody setting the pens up with the best bulls in the country as I also think this bull team business is crippling the events. It may pay for the contractors if they have a good weekend but it does not make for an exciting weekend for the fans. Aaron Roy was at the top of the order but his pick Shanghai had a mediocre trip as the bull just hop, skipped and jumped  out then  faked right before going around to the left away from Roy's hand then reversed right after hesitating. He had no timing and jumped out of the spin towards the end of the ride.Roy scored  86.25 because his ride scores were higher than the bul's.He was tied for 13/14 in the round. Valdiron de Oliveira was  4th in round one and picked  another great Berger bull and Coyote son-Little Coyote and finished 5th in the round. The bull faked left then went around right into Valdiron's hand with lots of kick and Valdiron scored 88.50. Dustin Hall tied for 10/11 in round one and picked Rock Star in round two; scoring 88 and finishing in 6th place. Dustin mastered the bull and remained centered in perfect position through  the ride as the bull went  to the left in a fast but low spin away from Dustin's hand. Brian Herman picked 7th in the draft and chose Why Not Minot who took three huge leaps out  with all fours off the ground before going into a  totally flat left spin that lost points. If he had continued with the kick and elevation it probably would have been 90+ instead of  87.50
Helton Barbosa was 23rd in the draft and chose Mr. Deeds who went around to the right in a flat spin but Helton beefed the ride up with a good looking spur rude and scored 87 with a lot more points attributed to Helton's  style then  the bull. In a word to the wise type of remark I want to say that many people out here are complaining about all of the flat  spinners of late ;and how good powerful bulls are being scored lower than these flat spinners, some of whom are even slow and flat. Helton was  9th in the round. McKennon Wimberley was 5th in the draft and he chose Almost Famous who took three leaps out  with belly rolls before  going around to the left into his hand. McKennon scored 86.75,higher  rider scores than the bull, and was 10th in the round.
Only 19 riders made the buzzer in the draft round where 23 had made it in the first round. As round three  was  a regular draw and 19 riders also made qualified rides there I can't see any difference or advantage to the draft.
Bryan Richardson, who made the mistake of grabbing his rope tail a fraction of a second too soon(losing the re-ride option) when his draft choice Dog Town played out by loping straight right then reversing straight left(bull score of  23) showed the crowd what he could  on a good bull and  in round three won the round with a great ride aboard a good bull we have seen a lot-Frank The Tank. The bull went around to the right away from Bryan's hand with a lot of action and a good bull score of 44.50. Bryan scored 90.50 . He was followed  by Mike Lee aboard Tighty Whitey who went around to the left into Mike's hand  in a drifting  spin with  good action. Mike  made a textbook ride  exhibiting complete control  for  88.50 and was scored  higher by the judges  than the bull.Mike was second in the round. It was good  to see Wiley Petersen finish third  in the round as he scored 88.25 aboard  Okie Dokie who went around to the right away from Wiley's hand with a lot of action and a good bull score of 44. Zack Brown looked great again as Flashover  went around to the right away from Zack's hand with lots of action and good timing.Zack scored 88,was fourth in the round  and was in the lead in the event.
Sean Willingham got his $5000 Enterprise bonus as he rode Deputy Sheriff for 87.25 and a tie for 5/6 in the round. The bull took four leaps out before  going around to the right into Sean's hand with good action. Sean's tie was with Ednei Caminhas  who rode Rockin Robin who went around to the right into his hand with good action before jumping out of the spin at the end of the ride.
Josh Koschel rode Liquid Kitty for 86.50 and 7th place as the bull went around to the right away from Josh's hand.He was followed by Pistol Robinson aboard Whiz Kid  with 86.25 points who went around to the left  into Pistol's hand then reversed right away from his hand and kept getting faster in the spin. Pistol tied with Luke Snyder at 8/9  as Luke  rode Catie Done It  who took two leaps out before going around to the left  away from Luke's hand; and didn't settle into good timing till halfway through the ride.
Its good to see Dusty LaBeth back on tour.He scored 86 aboard Scaredy Cat  and was 10th in the round. Tyler Pankewitz scored 85.75 aboard  Gizmo  and was 11th in the round. Nick Landreneau was 12th in the round aboard Tigerland  with 85.50 points.
J B Mauney scored 84.75 and was 13th in the round aboard Aches and Pains who had a bad trip and JB was offside at the start  but corrected himself as the bull went around to the left into JB's hand then jumped out of the spin.J B was better than the bull just as Guilherme  Marchi was better than Whammo who he rode for 14th place and 84.50 points. Whammo went around to the left away from Guilherme's hand then reversed right into it with hesitation. North Dakota Kid was around to the right into Helton Barbosa's hand as he scored 83.50 to finish 15th in the round. All  of these bull scores  from place 13 to the last qualified ride at 19 were scored at 41 or below  below.
Valdiron de Oliveira was 16th  aboard Poison Oak who took two leaps out then went around to the right then jumped forward and went around to the right again with belly kicks and then jumped out of the  spin. The bull  only scored 40.50
Big Red Truck was not impressive either as Jimmy Lathero scored 81.50 aboard  him to finish in 17th.It only gets worse as 7 of Hearts  had a bull score of 39.50 when Ryan McConnel finished 18th with 81 points as the bull took two leaps out then went around to the left into Ryan's hand then jumped out and bucked straight along the chutes with belly kicks. Another bad trip but by far not the worse one as Brendon Clark who finished  19th  had a score of 54.75 aboard  Trump Tower  with a bull score of only 27. He'll Austrian down the arena faking right and left  with no timing or kick.It was an awful trip and Brendon was unable to accept the re-ride because  he sprained his right hand. Also hurt in round three was Brian Canter who injured his right knee.
A lot of the buck offs came with lower than usual bull scores too. It looked like Ross Coleman had a re-ride going as Babe's Fireball was terrible. The bull skipped sideways tossing his head then faked right and left  and Ross was holding on while hanging on to the side at a 45 degree angle but the back judge challenged  the ride and the re-ride  option saying Ross touched at 7.4. The bull had a 25.50 score  and this is just what i have been ranting about.Any bull can have a bad trip but some of these have been horrible. L J Jenkins  beat Ross' low bull score as his draw Joe Mama  took three hops out and LJ  did fly off but the bull score-a low ,very low 20.00
A good friend who traveled  some distance to get to the event said she was bored during the draft for the short go. This died in the wool , totally loyal to the PBR fan was not impressed at all.
Luke Snyder was the first rider in the short go and he was stuck with Avalanche as he was the last rider in the draft.Luke  came down right out of the chute as the bull went right straight along the chutes. He was followed by J B Mauney aboard  Northern Chill who was around to the left with hesitation into JB's hand  to buck him off.He had a good bull score of 44.25.
Dustin Hall  was off of Sir Patrick as the bull went around to the left then jumped  out  of the spin.
Reese Cates  made a great ride to thrill the fans as he scored 90.75  to finish 3rd in the round and 4th in the average aboard his  choice of Holy Moly. The bull went around to the left away from Reese's hand then reversed to the right with lots of kick and twist as Reese made a great looking spur ride. Holy Moly scored 44.50.
That was followed by another exciting ride and probably the only excitement in the draft.Cody Lambert  and Justin McKee tried to push everyone into picking White Magic and until Mike Lee everyone said no way! Mike picked up the challenge and he became the first man to ride the bull as the bull took one leap out  then faked left and faked right and continued to fake left and right while belly kicking. Mike scored 88.75 and was 6th in the round and 6th in the average.
Brian Herman chose Evil Forces who took two leaps out then went around to the left away from Brian's hand and got Brian off at 7.1. Brian was 12th in the average.
McKennon Wimberley chose Far North  who went around  to the left into his hand in a drifting spin and scored  89.75 while finishing  4th in the round and 5th in the event.
Voodoo Child went around to the left into a fast spin with lots of power and kick sending Bryan Richardson   off early and earning the bull who was the best by far in the entire event  a bull score of 47.25.Now this is the type of bull I am used to seeing on the BFTS . Bryan was 10th in the average.
Sean Willingham chose Fire  Bird  who was around to the left away from Sean's hand then jumped out and took off straight with lots of kick and power causing Sean to lose his rope at a heartbreaking 7.9 Sean was 9th in the average.
Helton Barbosa made a great ride on his choice Spit Fire and won the short go with 91.50 points as the powerful bull was around to the right while covering lots of distance with belly rolls and high kicking. The bull had one of the top bull scores with 45.50. Helton was 3rd in the average.
Valdiron de Oliveira's choice of  North Star didn't help him as the bull went around to the left away from Valdiron's hand then hesitated before going back left to buck the Brazilian off. Valdiron was 8th in the average.
Josh Koschel had a great ride aboard his choice of Say I Won't Gunner who had a bull score of 45.25. Josh scored 91.25 and was second in the round and the event. The bull was around to the left then jumped forward in the spin with lots of kicking action. It was a good ride.
Aaron Roy's original pick War Zone had a bad trip and he was given a re-ride aboard Rez Boy  who had Roy off right out of the chute. Roy finished 11th in the event.
Ednei didn't pick well for himself as Walk The Line went around to the left and threw Ednei off the very first spin. Ednei was  7th in the average.
Possibly though the most exciting ride was left for last as Zack brown had to do everything he could possibly do to keep from being dragged forward to slap .Soulja Boy was as wild as a March Hare as he jerked Zack every which way  as he faked left then before going around to the right from Zack's hand then reversed left into it with lots of high kicks(over  the bull's head) and belly rolls. A judge challenged  the score of 89.25 saying Zack hit the bull with his free arm   while everyone saw Zack do everything to prevent that. Zack challenged the judge and the replay showed it was his chin only that hit and Zack was given his score . Zack was  5th in the round  but won his first event in four years. If points were awarded on the excitement a ride  causes this would have been the highest scoring ride  but... The bull scored 45.50. Congratulations to Zack.

More of CWR Bucking Bulls

The pictures I am posting with this  are of several of our bulls at rodeos and ABA bull ridings. Cat Five Hurricane is a power bucker with lots of rear and drop and an occasional belly roll combined with high kicks. Blue Norther is his younger half brother  who also comes out with rear and drop and is just now starting to turn back. Ghastly Disaster is the high flyer of the family. He is the only son of Bob-O(Dairy Queen) that we have out bucking and  he gets lots of air underneath  him.
We hope to be starting our practice pen soon and  have occasional jackpot bull ridings here at Cherokee Wolf RanchBlue Norther MS RodeoBlue NortherCat Five Hurricane ABA EventCat Five Hurricane and Trey AllenGhastly Disaster airborneGhastly Disaster Henderson rodeoGhastly Disaster in the airMM's TN Twister Jr Rodeo

Luke Snyder Wins The PBR's Nampa ,Idaho Event

Luke Snyder Wins PBR's BFTS Event At Nampa,Idaho

Round one was a first of a sort as it was actually held on Thursday night.Luke rode Corey and Horst's Okie Dokie for 90.25 points and second place in the round. He tied for  4/5  in round two with his ride aboard Berger's Bad Medicine who went around to the left away from Luke's hand with good action.Luke stayed up on his rope and made a textbook ride. The fans thought it was better than the two round winning rides  and groaned as Luke scored 89.25. I have to agree as Bad Medicine  had more action than either Rockin Robin or Lights Out. yet scored 44 to their 44.75. I have always been totally honest in my reports and won't quit now. Some of the bull scores have seemed over inflated for weeks  since  the start of this bull team competition and since the head judge  ,Cody Custer  left. I think they need Cody back!
In round three Luke tied for first place  with Brendon Clark.Luke drew 4 C's/Marvin Nixon's Devil's Night for 90 points. I want to congratulate Julie and Gilbert Carrillo for the quality of bulls they and their team partners have put together. Just a second for a plug here but if you have young bulls and want them trained as in chute broke or turning back send them to 4C's training  facility .Devil's  Night went around to the left away from Luke's hand with lots of kick, twist and drift.Luke was aggressive and remained in total control. All in all it was a great ride. As this was a draft weekend and Luke was in the lead going into the championship round he had first pick. He made a great choice as he picked the  Chad Berger/Clay Struve's  Walk The Line who went around to the right  into Luke's hand before reversing left away from Luke's hand in a fast spin with lots of action. Luke scored 91 to notch his first event title since 2005 beating out his friend Ross Coleman by just 9.75 points in the average.
The place was packed as it always has been in Nampa.Bull riding is big there and  many members of the Native American community support all events there. Wiley who is Shoshone/Blackfoot draws in the fans  as he comes from Ft Hall which is the Blackfoot Reservation in SE Idaho. The fans were rooting for him but it just was not Wiley's weekend. Orange Pop popped Wiley off in round one  and he was next to last  in the draw.He took Milkman(not Harry Vold's bull), a black bull who took two big leaps out with major belly rolls then went to the left pulling Wiley forwards for a freehand slap. Wiley did get the fans cheering though in round three when he rode Kamo Kat for 86.25 points as the bull went around to the left into Wiley's hand with good kick and action. Wiley tied for 16/17 in the round.
Another favorite for the crowd at Nampa has always been Ross Coleman.Ross had a great weekend and ended up second in the average. Ross was 15th in round one  aboard Crouching Tiger with 85.25 and he earned  85.50 points for 14th place in round two  aboard Chicken Creek who was not too impressive as he took four leaps forward before going around to the left away from Ross' hand. Ross was  8th in Lil' Coyote who made one turn around to the left away from Ross' hand before reversing right into his hand.Ross is a tall guy and this was a tiny bull but Ross rode aggressively and had good spur action while shifting his hips forward with every jump. He scored 88.50.
Ross chose  Don Kish's  God's Gift as his championship round bull and it was a great choice for him as he won the round with a great looking 91.5 ride. The bull took two leaps out then went around to the right into Ross' hand with good timing and action.Ross was in complete control and never bobbled. He ended up second in the average to his pal Luke.
Mike Lee won round one with a great ride aboard Gold Bell Wine for 90.75 but didn't get his Enterprise bonus in round two as he bucked off of his draft choice Tighty Whitey at 7.0. In round three his weekend ended as Catywompus bucked him off.
It was a good weekend for Brian Herman as he tied for 9/10 in round one  aboard Clam Digger with 87.50 points. He then took the momentum forward and tied for 1/2 in round two with his draft choice of Berger/Struve's Rockin' Robin. This was his fourth time out on this bull so he knew him well. The bull went around to the right into Brian's hand for 90.5 points but ,and this is not just my own opinion, the ride was not  as strong as L.J. Jenkins 89.75 ride. Sometimes it seems the judges set the standard a little too high at the start of the round and adjust down later. This has been a war cry of fans  for a long time now. In round three Brian and  Dustin Hall shared the Enterprise bonus with their respective rides.Dustin had rode  Kish's Lights Out in round two for the tie.The bull is a fast spinner who went to the right into Dustin's hand slowed down then picked up speed again.I think both of these guys are great riders and they looked much better than the bulls  they picked. I love Craig Hummer but I sure am tired of all this hoopla about  number of 90+ rides and have seen fans complaining on message boards of the same.It almost seems as if the judges are scoring some bulls too high just  to break a record of 90+ rides. When you have been around bull riding a long time you have  feel that a lot of the scores this season have been inflated. Sorry Randy but this is not just my opinion but what fans are saying too; and in some cases your  announcers also where some of the scores are concerned. Having my own bulls and having bucked them and also judged at ABA futurities last season there are many rides I sure don't agree with.many scores that seem inflated  bother me but not as much as scores that deserved higher markings. The funny thing is people  who are even new fans of the sport have mentioned  this about certain rides. Maybe Cody Custer needs to return and get these judges in shape. And again a constant complaint against the judges  which I keep hearing is the way they hand out re- rides. Brian Canter was robbed this weekend as  the yellow flag should have been thrown at the start of his ride aboard  The Godfather as the bull hit his nose coming out of the chute sideways and took one leap and slammed into the chute gate banging  Brian's arm into the chute. No flag and Brian did stay on but the replay judge  who many are getting to dislike challenged the ride while the other judges were giving Brian a score. He said No Score and  I sure didn't see anything  in the replay for that decision. I might have missed it but  its not the first time this judge denied a reride. On one occasion  the bull stumbled out to his knees but the judge said he didn't go down to his belly. Some thing is wrong here!
Brendon Clark tied with Luke Snyder's 90 point ride  to share the honors in round three.Brendon rode  Diamond G's Charmed I'm Sure  who faked left then went around to the right in a drifting spin while also jumping forward in the spin.Brendon had complete control.
Ross Coleman's ride in the Championship round was the first qualified ride as the bulls blanked the first six riders. The bulls dominated the rest of the round until Luke's ride.
My condolences to Pistol Robinson on the loss of his beloved mother who died from MS at the end of March. There were several injuries  with the most notable being Mike White's concussion in round one when Total Darkness put him down hard;   putting Mike, who has a record of concussions out for several weeks. Guilherme Marchi will undergo x-rays on his left ankle  but continued to ride this weekend. Tony Mendes tore the cartilage in his left knee in round two and could not finish the weekend out. He's set for surgery and will be out  till Billings.

Jay Morrow Wins The ABC Rodeo CBR Challenge

The ABC Rodeo CBR Challenge Event

The CBR held this event  at the end of the PRCA's ABC Rodeo in Lubbock,TX  on Sunday, April 6 ; and several of its riders who have been called up to the BFTS of the PBR flew right back from Nampa to compete at there. Jay Morrow(Wayland,IA) won his first CBR title as he managed to beat out five World Champions for this event Championship.
Usually I wait until I see the event before posting which is why Ft Worth won't be posted until the end of this week  but  because this event won't air until April 23rd I decided to  get the news out now. .In the fifth section of the long go Jay scored 86 aboard Scott Burruss' Twister  to tie for 10/11 in the round with Steve Woolsey.  In the long go  he faced off against  the Hurst/Garrett/Dyess bull Carney Man for a great 91 point ride to win both the Championship round and the event Championship.
Condolences to Pistol Robinson  and his family on the loss of his mother who had battled MS courageously for several years .Pistol made it back from Nampa  but bucked off of Rich Bumbaca's  Twigs  & Berries.
PRCA World Champion Cody Hancock has been riding hot this season and looking like the Cody Hancock of old.He rode Alan Murphy's Rocky for 84.5. He was followed by Chance Smart aboard Murphy's Border Patrol  for 87 points. Brandon Edwards rode Murphy's Itch & Scratch for 85 while  CBR 2007 World Champion Bonner Bolton rode Murphy's Cherokee Fiddler for 86.5. Howdy Cloud ended the  first section with an 87 point ride aboard Murphy's Chrome Molly.
Quite a few of the CBR riders who ride PBR made it back for this event. In the second section Murphy's Mellow Yellow bucked off Jarrod Craig but Clayton Williams got a score aboard Murphy's Deuce Bigalow for 77 points.
In the third section PRCA World Champion Wesley Silcox rode Scott Burruss' Brass Apache for 86.5. Burruss' Bad Moon  was a good draw for Cooper Kanngiesser who won the long go with a good ride for 88 points. He was followed by Steve Woolsey aboard Burruss' Medicine Man for 86 and Tony Smart aboard Burruss' Evil Eye for 83.
Section four began with Francisco Morales 84 point ride aboard Mike Johnson's Captain Jack. Douglas Duncan rode Lyndal Hurst's Fat Jimmy for 87.5 followed by Laddan Ledbetter aboard Hurst's Chino for 87 .Bronson Butcher finished the ride off with 87.5 aboard Hurst's Ludicrus.
Yet another one who flew back from Nampa ,Reese Cates bucked off of the Guidry /Hurst bull Mooseknuckle. CBR/PRCA World Champion Matt Austin scored 85.5 aboard Jesse Hill's  Parachute  which came right after Jay Morrow's ride aboard Hurst's Twister for 86. Mike Moore was the last qualified ride in the section with 87 aboard Glen Southwick's  Curious George.
There were only three qualified rides in the Championship round starting with Cooper Kanngiesser's 89 point ride aboard Alan Murphy's  Hugh. Then it was all the bulls  until Wesley Silcox's managed to hang on  for  87.5 ride aboard Scott Burruss' Georgia Sun.  The winning ride in the round and the event was Jay Morrow's 91 point ride aboard Carney Man.Jay had tied with Cooper Kanngiesser with 177 on two but the back judge awarded the win to Jay by a fraction. Usually this means that  Cooper's score in the short go  had a higher bull score than rider score. If both had been identical then they would have shared the title.
Be sure to catch the CBR on RFD-TV this Wednesday evening. The Lubbock event will air on April 23rd.
The next  CBR event will be the George Paul Memorial in Del Rio , TX on May 3 and 4.This  legendary event is the oldest stand alone bull riding.
Chad Castillo will undergo surgery on his shoulder after the George Paul Memorial with Dr Tandy Freeman doing the surgery. Zack Oakes is out for 4-6 months with a broken hip that requires surgery while Mike Moore is riding well with three broken toes. Clint Craig is staying out a few more weeks  while his fractured shoulder heals; and John Jacobs is out for 4-8 weeks with a broken collarbone. Ardie Maier's recent MRI of his broken neck looked good and the doctors feel right now that he won't require surgery.

Chad Castillo Wins The Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge

I was unable to make it to Ft. Worth once again but I had my eyes and ears there as my husband Norman attended  the event again. I could have had this up and posted but to be honest I wanted to watch the round  before reporting on it.And it was well worth the wait.

Douglas Duncan  started the action off with his 84 point ride aboard  Dan Duncan's Big Red  as the bull went around to the left five times then jumped out and bucked straight.  Chance Smart followed aboard Chad and Cherie Weishuhn's Monkey Blood who went around to the right then reversed back left to buck Chance off. This was an NBBA  Futurity so there are lots of new names here.

Patrick Fisher's Funky Monkey made quick work of Kanin Asay as he went around to the right away from Kanin's hand.
Luke Haught drew one of the NBBA's top bulls in Alvin Jones' Apollo I . Haught got behind at the get go and went flying out the back door as Apollo spun to the left into Haught's hand.
Howdy Cloud drew Tino Martinez's bull Bad Blue who faked right and left  then turned back to the right into Howdy's hand then jumped forward and reversed the spin to buck Howdy off.
JC Bean  drew  Dan Duncan's Bad Moon who was around to the left into JC's hand. The bull got faster each turn and got JC  leaned back and off.
SH Farms June Bug got  the best of Jay Morrow as  the bull took three huge leaps  out  and turned back to the right to send Jay flying off.
Guidry/Hurst's Comet's Gold , a fast spinner, turned back to the right away from Mike Moore's hand with high kicks to buck Mike off.
Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Rebel took two high leaps forward, faked left and went around to the right into Chad German's hand, and Chad was off at the buzzer with a score of 85.5.
Wesley Silcox made a great ride for 91 points aboard Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's Maverick who took long leaps  out before going around to the right into Wesley's hand.   Wesley made an aggressive spur ride and remained centered and in complete control.
Several of the riders had been at Rodeo Houston and CBR President Tuff hedeman  hired a plane to fly them up to Ft. Worth for this event. Tuff always goes the extra mile for the riders.
The Jerry Copp/Britt Bockius bull Spittin' Gun went around to the right into Cody Hancock's hand fast and had Cody out of position and off.
Cole Echols made a good ride aboard Will Robinson's Bull Dog for 88.5 as the bull went around to the right into Cole's hand with good timing and action.
Jake Littlefield followed with his 89.5 aboard the Logan/Foutch bull Wichita who took one leap out then went around to the right into Jake's hand but flattened out during the last part of the ride. Wichita did spin fast and covered a lot of ground and Jake  matched him move for move.
It looked like Kenny Westrope was going to get a good score as Hog Creek Ranch's Dust Storm went around to the left in a really fast spin with Kenny hanging on  over the right side  near the end but he was DQ'd when the judges aid he slapped the bull.He still made the effort.
Glenn Carlton's Trouble With Humans took three long leaps out  before going around to the left to buck off Logan Knibbe. Guidry/Hurst's  bull Hot Diggity Damn,a son of my favorite Hot Damn went around to the right out of the chute and pulled Ladden Ledbetter down and over the front.
Seth Reynold's  scored 86.5 as L&G's Skat Jacket  took one leap out then faked left then reversed right into Seth's hand in a loping buck. This was the first time this bull was ever rode.
Cody Whitney made a great ride but a horrible dismount aboard Alan Murphy's Peep Show. The bull went around to the left into Cody's hand in a fast spin and Cody remained in perfect position through the ride.He scored 88.5 but hung up  with his spur in his rope as he made the dismount and even Roach Hedeman came running to the rescue. You had bullfighters, riders, gatemen all trying to hold the bull and they were lucky no one else was hurt because of an overzealous outrider who ran his horse right into the melee se veal times and tossed a loop while all the guys are trying to rescue Cody. I was told he almost lassoed Ray Clary but I saw a loop bounce off of Matt Baldwin too. Cody did break his wrist and was unable to ride in the short go. Meanwhile Ray Clary dressed the outrider down and it was deserved. Barrelman Cody Sousby used his knife to cut Cody Whitney's bull rope which was the only way to get him loose.I understand Sousby cut his own hand in the process.
Bonner Bolton,2007 CBR World Champion didn't fare well as  Bobby Harrison's Sam T Straight turned back into his hand and got Bonner down into the well. Danny McDowell rode  L&G's  Black Jacket for 87 as the bull took four long leaps  to the left then went around to the right into Danny's hand. Collin McTaggart drew Carney Man(Hurst/Garrett/Dyesss)who went around to the left into Collin's hand and beat him around the corner for a buck-off.
Zack Oakes made a great looking ride aboard Lyndal Hurst's chubby looking bull Fat Jimmy.Dont be fooled because this bull can really buck! He took two leaps out  then went around to the right into Zack's hand with drift and power.Zack scored 89.5.
Travis Sellers rode Wes Bruce's Texas Down Under for 87.5 points .The bull went around to the right real fast but flattened out early.
Hard Eight's Snake Eyes faked right  then went around  to the right into Dave Samsel's hand after leaping forward in the spin to get Dave out of shape and off. Bobby Harrison's Gambino Wine hop ,skipped and jumped out then pulled Bronson Butcher down forward and over  GB's head.Bron son got hit but is okay.
B J Schumacher fell victim to Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo's  Dirty Demon who took one leap out and made a sharp left  to beat BJ around the corner.
Cooper Kanngiesser rode Jesse Hill's Black Cat for 86 as the bull hopped out then went around to the left away from Cooper's hand then reversed right.
Hill's Parachute  sent Kolt Miller flying off as he took two out and went around to the right into Kolt's hand ,sending Kolt off to the outside.
David Bailey Jr's Orange Pop  had his way with Steve Woolsey as he turned into Steve's hand  and got him leaned back on his hand and off.
Billy Jones' Kaitlyn's Kat , a small bull was not the best draw for Navajo Nation Champion Spud Jones who is tall. The bull went around to the left away from Spud's hand and got him leaned back  and off at 7.5. I think I will have to do battle with Tuff  as he claims he's Spud's number one fan and I say I am! Spud not only is very talented as a bull rider but a joy to interview.
Chad Castillo  made a good solid ride  aboard Alan Murphy's Mr. Nice Guy who went around to the right away from Chad's hand then moved forward before reversing left into Chad's hand  then went straight.Chad scored 87.
Danell Tipton scored 88.5 aboard Scott Burruss' Arkansas Flash who went around to the right away from Danell's hand then reversed left into it while Danell spurred.
Jarrod Craig made a solid ride aboard Burruss' Windmill for 86 who is a flat but very fast spinner. The bull made himself dizzy and laid down. Jarrod's score was tied by Tony Smart aboard Mike Johnson's Pearl Harbor  who went around to the left with not much kicking action. Johnson's McCrazy took a long and strong leap out away from matt Austin's hand and had the World Champion off quickly.
The last ride on the broadcast was Mexican National Champion Hugo Pedrero aboard Tut Henry's Jolly Rancher who went around to the left while moving forward with no timing then reversed right.Hugo scored  88.
The riders who were not shown were all buck-offs.
In the short go there was a lot of action  from top bulls and only three qualified ride.sI really enjoy the broadcasts. I love the way they have various stock contractors profile their own bulls. And I sure loved the way Jeff Medders referred to Tuff's event as "The party that Tuff built."I also enjoyed seeing Matt Baldwin's segment about  bull fighting .I loved his comment"If you see me take off running I'm fixing to get smoked." That is so true! And they showed  a brave with his face painted red and white standing with his horse. I thought that was appropriate.
Douglas Duncan was the first rider out in the short go and he drew Billy Jones' Hugh who took one huge leap forward then turned back to the left into Douglas' hand  while flattening out in the spin and drifting. He drew Douglas  down and caused him to slap. Clayton Williams bull Head Banga Sent Chad German flying out the back door as the bull went around to the left away from Chad's hand with power. Clayton has a good one here.
Then it was White Chocolate(Scott Burruss) around  to the right into Jarrod Craig's hand before reversing left away from Jarrod's hand. Jarrod, the first rider to  score on two head  looked perfect and scored 88 on the ride and had 174 on two head.
Burruss' Tombstone took two leaps out before turning back to the right with drift and got Cooper Kanngiesser down into the well.
Alan Murphy's Chrome molly was around to the left from Tony Smart's hand  but the reverse  to the right got Tony and  it was bulls 4-riders 1.
Murphy's Who's There kept it going as he was around to the left in a drifting spin then jumped forward to get Seth Reynolds down early.
Rich Bumbaca's Twigs & Berries is a big ,strong bull who takes two huge leaps out and had Danny McDowell off as he went back left.
Chad Castillo stopped the bulls'  winning momentum with his great ride for 91 aboard Alan Murphy's Smokin' Joe who faked left and right then went around to the left in a fast  drifting spin with a lot of strong action.Chad spurred from the start and looked great. He took the lead with 178.50 on two head.
Bumbaca's  Auger  faked  right and left then went around to the right into Travis Sellers' hand with a lot of action, kick and speed. He threw change-ups and belly rolls at Travis to get him off early.
Mexican National Champion Hugo Pedrero looked great aboard Murphy's Full Throttle  who went around to the left into Hugo's hand in a fast spin with good timing and a lot of action.Hugo remained centered and in control while scoring 90.He had 178 on two head for second place in the event and round.
Danell Tipton bucked off of Bumbaca's Easy Street who went around to the left into Danell's hand and made him slap.
Murphy's Buckshot was around to the right into Cole Echols hand when Cole lost hold with his feet and the bull pulled him forward and down.Cole's behind and the bull's horn met on the dismount and Cole was helped out.
Tut Henry's Cochise  had Zack Oakes off right out of the chute. That's one powerful bull. Bumbaca's Hasta Luego had Jake Littlefield off right away and its questionable as whether he lost his rope or just bailed off. He might have thought he had a re-ride coming as the bull stumbled slightly but never lost a step nor went down to his knees.
It was down to the last rider,Wesley Silcox and he drew  Burruss' Tar Baby who went around to the left away from Wesley's hand  and sent Wesley flying off.
Chad Castillo won the prestigious Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge before a packed house and his family which included his new baby. Congratulations to Chad.
The next CBR event will be the George Paula Memorial in Del Rio Texas  in May. Check my report on April's Lubbock event and be sure to watch the broadcast of RFD-TV.

Logan Knibbe Wins His First CBR Event

Logan Knibbe Tops The Field In Longview, TX

As the temperature dropped in Longview, TX the excitement grew; and the fans were on the edges of their seats in this SRO There were even fans crowded around us where photographer Teri Lann and I were working by the arena fence. What a crowd!

. As the race for the event title went down to the wire the excitement grew. When the dust had finally cleared it was Stephenville, TX’s Logan Knibbe who won his first event title. CBR President, 4X World Champion Tuff Hedeman presented Logan with his winner’s check and Resistol hat; and also interviewed him. Logan told Tuff:” I’ve been waiting a long time to win one of these deals.” Tuff called the winning ride “awesome” which it was.

Logan rode in the second section of the long go and took the lead with a great looking 89.5 ride aboard Lonnie Brown’s Copan Cat. The bull came out with power, spinning to the left into Logan’s hand with high kicks then reversed right towards the end of the ride. Some of the best four-year-old bulls in the country were here as this was a NBBA Classic event.

Logan held on to his long go lead until Ardie Maier (Twin Lakes, S.D. [which is on the Cheyenne River Reservation]) the 28th rider out made an incredible 91 point ride aboard the Lyndal Hurst/Cody Ohl/Garrett/Dyess bull Carney Man who made a fast spin to the left away from Ardie’s hand with lots of high kicking and power. Ardie, was perfect and exhibited complete control. Ardie went into the championship round in the lead with Logan right behind him.

Logan had his work cut out for him as first Navajo Nation World Champion Bull Rider Spud Jones (Twin Lakes, AZ) took the lead in the short go with a solid ride aboard Double R Bucking Bulls’ Sharp Shooter for 88.5 points. Spud is the first Native American to win a CBR event (Window Rock) and we were rooting for him. There have been many riders who are of Native American descent, but Spud is one from Indian Rodeo who is carving out a name for himself not only there but also in the CBR and the PRCA. The bull spun to the left away from Spud’s hand then jumped out of the spin before reversing to the right into Spud’s hand. In the long go Spud rode Zorro’s number one rated son Derringer for 85.5.Derringer took one leap out of the chute with high kicks before spinning to the right into Spud’s hand in a fast though low spin. Spud was out of position towards the 8 second mark but held on to his rope till the buzzer sounded. Derringer is currently in first place in the NBBA Classics standings for 4 year olds. Spud’s lead of 174 was quickly overcome when Livingston, Alabama’s Luke Kelly rode Scott Burruss’ Georgia Son for 90 points as the bull took one leap out before spinning to the left with lots of power and action. Luke made a textbook ride with good free arm action and high spurring. Luke had come out aboard Ben Brown’s Bee-Be-Gone in the long go who spun to the left away from Luke’s hand with high kicks and it looked like a buck-off but the bull had fouled Luke at the gate throwing him out of position. Luke got the option of a reride and this time the bull took one long leap out before spinning away from Luke’s hand to the left in a low spin. Luke scored 86 so added to his short go’s 90 that gave him 175 on two head and the lead. That held until Muskogee, OK rider Bronson Butcher rode Henry Wilson’s Black Gold in the short go for 88 points. Bronson rode him jump for jump, as the bull spun to the left with high kicks. Butcher is a young rider to watch. He had been called in as an alternative rider for Cody Hancock. Butcher made a good long go ride aboard Dan Duncan’s Big Red for 88.5 points in his first ever CBR event The bull spun to the left into Butcher’s hand then reversed right at the end of the ride. His score of 176.5 on two took over the lead. Logan Knibbe quickly ended that with his ride aboard Alan Murphy’s Deuce Bigalo for 89 points who took two leaps out of the chute before spinning to the right away from Logan’s hand with lots of rear and drop then jumped out of it and bucked straight. Logan had the lead with 178.5 on two head and it was nail-biting time for the fans. Only Ardie Maier remained to ride and he would need 88 points to win. He had drawn Scott Burruss’ Pole Cat who spun to the right into Ardie’s hand then jumped out of the spin and bucked straight before returning to a right spin. It just was not strong enough and Ardie scored 85 to end up third in the event while the long awaited win went to Logan Knibbe.

There were a lot of good bulls in the event with the best four year olds in the country in the NBBA portion of the event. The winning bull was Lufkin Ranch and Rodeo’s Maverick; another of the great young sons of my all time favorite Zorro. Maverick bucked Skeeter Kingsolver off in the long go. I spoke with Chuck Griffith before the event and he pointed out to me which of their bulls are Zorro’s sons. I can relate to Chuck’s pride in these babies as I feel the same way about my own bulls who buck in the ABA To me Zorro is another Blueberry Wine; maybe even better when he comes out with his rear and drop. Then again I am prejudiced as I have three young bulls that come out like Zorro although they are no relation to him.

In the long go Ardie Maier was first while Logan Knibbe finished second. Bronson Butcher was third in the long go while Houma, LA’s Trent Cormier finished fourth with his 87.5 ride aboard Wes Bruce’s Train Robber who is a little spinner with lots of action who spun to the right into Trent’s hand real fast. Pistol Robinson (Burelson, TX) was fifth with 87 points aboard Harlan Robertson’s Rusty who spun to the left into Pistol’s hand with a roll and lots of high kicking. Pistol stayed up front and looked good. He’s currently in first place in the CBR standings. New Bloomfield, MO’s Corey Davis tied for 6th  /7th in the long go with Jena, LA’s Danny McDowell at 86 points. Corey rode Lyndal Hurst’s Rehab who took one leap out then spun to the left into Corey’s hand before jumping out of the spin and bucking straight. Danny rode Terrell Sullivan’s Fat Boy who took one leap forward then spun to the right into Danny’s hand with high kicking while Danny spurred him high. Luke Kelly was 8th in the round with his 85.5 ride aboard Bee-Be-Gone. Luke who finished fourth in the event was #1 in the short go with 90 on Georgia Son while event winner Logan Knibbe was second on Deuce Bigalo. Spud Jones who was fifth in the average was third in the round with his 88.5 on Sharp Shooter while Bronson Butcher who was second in the average was fourth in the round aboard Black Gold. Jarrod Craig who scored 83 in the long go aboard Bryce Cooper’s Chipaway tied for fifth in the short go aboard Alan Murphy’s Buckshot with Danny McDowell aboard Scott Burruss’ Evil Eye with 87 points. Jarrod was 7th in the average while Danny was 6th.Trent Cornier was eight in the average with his 87.5 ride from the long go.

There was so much to see and do this weekend as the event was held in conjunction with Longview Heritage Days. There were autograph signings, vendors, concerts just so much. We saw old friends and met new people .I finally met Alan Murphy and he told me he had just bought Train Robber, Rampage’s Ghost and Mr. Slim from Wes Bruce before the event began. Alan also bought some good bulls from Wes at the Finals and now owns Cherokee Fiddler and Cowboy Cut.

I want to thank Mary Ramos for all her help. That is one hard working woman and I hope to profile her and Scott Davis soon. Scott was a big help to us also and deserves thanks. The fans were lined up Saturday morning at Jack O’ Diamonds Dodge to meet Tuff Hedeman, Matt Baldwin, Layne McCasland.Cody Sousby and Ray Clary.KYFX 105.7 Country was there along with the drum line from the Longview High School Marching band. Danny Tyler Danny and Drew Morning Show) had Teri Lann spin the KYFX  “Spin To Win” wheel but alas, our photographer didn’t win a prize. She did get to take Danny’s picture though and also Barbara Biggs who is with the station. Thanks also to David Carter, the sales manager at Jack O’ Diamonds who allowed us to take pictures for Tanasi Journal there. Teri took some shots of the Drum Line (Adonis Centers, Jonathan Marshall, Shawndell McGee, Kyle Stinson, Cameron Peoples, Daniel Pierce, Orey Love, Rosa Sanchez and Melissa Preston) thanks to assistant director Grant Woodson. The band was there doing a car wash to raise money for a spring break trip to Disney World where they get to march and play in the parade there. Teri got pictures of fans and their heroes including Tuff Hedeman. Thanks also to Eli Lux for watching over us. Eli is one of Tuff’s golf buddies and Teri got a good shot of the two of them together.

For those who wonder where Pam Minnick is her obligations to RFD-TV have kept her away from the CBR broadcasts and she is missed by all but we wish her well with her new position.

Tuff is wearing his CBR credentials on a beautiful piece of beadwork, which was given to him in Gallup.  He is probably the busiest man I have ever seen. He rushes from appearance to appearance, then works behind the chutes making sure everything goes right; and also greets the fans and does the presentation and interview with the winner! I get tired just watching him. It was good to see Andy Stewart .I think he is one of the better announcers in bull riding and rodeo.

It was good to talk with Jody Newberry who is doing well in the CBR.His wife Amanda is currently taking her clinicals and will be done with college soon for all the Bullriding Fans who have missed Amanda’s posts on the lists.

The CBR now has cheerleaders of a sort-the CBR Bull Babes. They were helpful also. I love these outdoor events but maybe one day I will learn that in some places the heat turns to cold temps at night!

It was great to see CBR Founder Terry Williams. To see the big guy looking healthy and wearing that great smile of his was a prayer come true. I give my thanks to Grandfather for that. During intermission they had a miniature bull riding with junior rodeo riders and a calf scramble for the kids. After the event there was a really good country music concert with Rich McCready and his band. I was really impressed with him.

If I have forgotten anyone I sure am sorry. Watch for my interview with Spud Jones, and try and make it to the CBR’s next event in Jackson, MS on November 17th.Teri and I will be there. Hope to see some of our readers there.

The ABA At Circle 13 August 25th & 26th

The American Bullriding  Association At Circle 13

We had a great time in spite of the hot, dusty weather at this two day event at Circle 13.Scott and Terry Littrell put on a great bull riding event   with the Sunday portion being dedicated to the memory of TN Rodeo Promoter and Producer, Jerry Williams.

Saturday night's event began with Jessica Perez, eight year old daughter of bull rider Jessie Perez and his wife Melissa carrying the American Flag. I am not even going to try and spell the name of the "Indian" Ciudad that Jessie's mother came from but Jessie was born in Chihuahua and grew up in Durango Mexico. His uncle,Martine Perea is the Mexican World Champion ; and Jessie ,himself , rode in Mexico . I hope to do an interview with Jessie who has explained to me that in Mexico there are three forms of bull riding and I intend to learn all about them. Melissa Perez  is of Cherokee descent from Maquokota, Iowa;and like myself  you cannot miss her heritage. Ok so we are stereotypical!Gracie Woods , Wes Woods' 4 yr old  daughter carried the Circle 13 Flag.  Wes and Johnny Byrd were  Saturday's judges and our funny man was ,of course ,Mike Russell who also did the Cowboy's Prayer. Matt Littrell and Brent Sisco were the bullfighters.

The event began with Corey Bailey of Paris,TN aboard Circle 13's A10 Rimshot who was  as bad in the chute as out.The big, powerful bull took two leaps forward with high kicking then faked right before going into a slow left spin then jumped out and bucked straight.Corey scored 75 to start off with an early lead.

The next rider was Jarret Melton aboard TNT Dynamite  who didn't have his normal trip but hop, skipped and jumped quickly across the arena to the

left.Jarret ,from Lexington,TN was in complete control as he scored 72.

John Frantz of Guthrie ,Oklahoma scored 74 aboard CWR Bucking Bulls' Cat Five Hurricane who traveled in a wide left circle with lots of kick and power.

Matthew McCarley,Denmark,TN,didn't fare as well as Circle 13's Slam Dunk did just that to him.Buzzard bait ,another good Circle 13 bull jerked the rope out of Clifton Alred's hand.Trey Knolton scored 77 to take over the lead aboard Circle 13's EG Get U Some as the bull bucked straight to the left then turned back facing the chute then reversed back left and bucked straight then reversed right.

Mike Russell's son Josh who now lives in Horn Lake ,MS. came down early fromP1 Prince Albert while Marvin Littrell's 49% Marvelous Marv got Buck Friskillo off early.Charlie Mullins of Millington  looked like he was going to make a qualified ride aboard my(CWR) bull TN Two Hawks but  Two Hawks  got Charlie off at 7.34 as he bucked in a left circle, alternating belly kicks with  back kicks.

We had a break in the riding for some barrel racing.Four year old Gracie Woods' time was 24.47 and she looked adorable .Lorise Stegal rode in 26.43 while Jessica Perez aboard old Kate  got a time of 23  although she was a little off the pattern.Uncle James took 19 mo old niece  Amelia Phipps around the barrels  ,leading her horse;getting his niece started really young.Ashley Russell,a pretty good barrel racer timed in at 20:12 on a horse in training while Jessica Edelman won the round with 15:21.

Then it was back to bull riding with Guthrie ,OK's Rick Marchant aboard P&M's  Red Wasp who took three huge leaps out  then made one loping spin to the left and dumped Rick when the bull jumped out of the spin.JM Cox of Jackson bucked off of Circle 13's 14K Golddigger who had lots of direction change with belly rolls.Zack Jackson(Middleton)scored 76 aboard one of my favorite Circle 13 bulls 54 Super Dave who took one leap out then made one spin to the left and jumped out and circled wide left before going straight.Zack scored 76.I want to add here that the many prayers for 19 yr old rider Brian Vincent  have had great results as  one of the ABA's most personable riders was cancer free in his last tests.Brian is now back riding at the practice pen.

Brandon Carter of Nutbush ,TN got his chimes rung by Jordan's Pet.Brandon hung up and spent more time under the bull then beside him. Jake  Whitman carried  Brandon out who had his vest blown off and his chaps and jeans tore by the bull. After a fifteen minute rest ,Brandon was fine.He had the wind knocked out of him and was just worn out.Jessie Perez (Henderson) rode one of Circle 13's biggest and baddest Copenhagen Drifter for the high score of 80.Jessie was riding against all of our advice with what is most likely a broken wrist but he's a true cowboy The bull spun to the left with lots of rear and drop but bad hand and all,Jessie remained in control.

D L Goodman(Mercer) drew P&M's Whitewater who took three long leaps out  then jerked the rope  out of his hand.Boo didn't have his normal trip as the black bull took three short hops before taking one spin to the right then jumped out of the spin and bucked straight but Colby Criswell still managed to tie with Trey Knolton for 2nd and 3rd in the round at 77.No shame coming off of P&M's Double Trouble who not only is small like Blueberry Wine  but bucks like him.The bull who has a very fast right spin had Van Lynch down too early.I like this little bull  a lot.

Colby Criswell bucked off of P&M's Waterboy in the short go but tied for 4th and 5th in the event with Trey Knolton.Colby hung up and in the attempt to save him the bull horned Matt Littrell in the head just above his right eye.Matt was a little woozy but he finished the event.Always the true cowboy! Colby didn't fare as well as he was kicked in the head and suffered a concussion and a possible broken jaw.He was taken to the hospital for x-rays.

Zack Jackson made a good ride aboard Circle 13's Denmark Biggs who faked left  then spun to the right  and it was nearly a reride option as the bull stopped for a second before  reversing left.Zack scored 74 to lead the event with 150 on two head. Jessie Perez drew Full House who is a handful. The big, powerful bull took 4 leaps straight out with lots of power before turning left and getting Jessie off.Jessie finished second in the event. Trey Knolton was down early from White Knight but still tied for 4th and 5th.The best ride just happened to be the last ride as Corey Bailey rode  Circle 13's Beavis for 82 points and a total of 157 on two head to win the event while knocking Zack down to second place. Beavis,a small bull exploded out then faked left and right then spun left with lots of kick and action.

On Sunday afternoon the event was dedicated to Jerry Williams. Several riders who were scheduled to ride  had called in  as they were having trouble getting back to TN and the event was delayed an hour.Guy Cox did the announcing for Scott and Mike Russell rode a bull in memory of Jerry Williams as  did Tim Frall.

Jerry's long time friend  Jerry Overton judged the event along with Johnny Byrd while Mike Russell gave the Cowboy's prayer.Robert Russell brought in the riderless horse for their lost friend Jerry Williams while Kina Cox carried the Double J flag.

Jessie Perez started the action off aboard Circle 13's Buzzard Bait and had a good ride going until 7.8 when he just could not hold on anymore due to the pain in his riding hand as the bull got him leaned back on his arm.Because  several of the riders were unable to get there in time and several who were scheduled had been injured Saturday this event was set up as two rounds with all riders  in them.Jessie declined his second round.Hopefully he will go have his wrist checked out and  heal quickly.Jarret Melton came down quickly from54 Super Dave while D.L. Goodman scored 66 as Cat Five Hurricane  who hates the heat bucked straight down the middle of the arena with power kicks.DL felt that power as he split the crotch of his jeans open!Josh Russell got KO'd  when Prince Albert yard darted him. That and the heat made Josh a little woozy for awhile.Corey Bailey made a good ride aboard14K Golddigger  who took two leaps out ,one right spin then jumped forward and bucked straight.

Like Jessie ,Van Lynch had a good ride going but Slam Dunk slammed him down at 7.8.Matthew McCarley redeemed himself with a 71 point ride when Beavis bucked straight down the arena with kick, rear and drop.

Both Josh Russell and Jessie Perez scratched for round two as the injuries took their toll. Jarret Melton added his name to that list when he came down hard and he might have a broken rib.The guys took an extra long break between rounds due to the heat.

Matthew McCarley rode Jordan's Pet for 71 as the bull took one leap forward then circled left ,covering a lot of distance.Matthew had 142 on two and was in the lead.

Boo  had a bad trip  as he took two short ,low leaps out and made one spin right before jumping out of it;continuing down the arena with lots of direction changes but no kick. Van Lynch was given the option of a reride although he scored 67 as Bull just didn't kick or get the elevation he normally has.Van declined the option and took the score .D.L. bucked off Get U Some while Corey  Bailey followed with a great ride aboard Circle 13's Full House who exploded out of the chute with two huge leaps then spun to the left once, reversed right with a roll then reversed back left with high kicks, action and power. He's a great bull! Corey had 152 on two to win the event while Matthew McCarley came in second,Van Lynch was third and D.L.Goodman was fourth.

The ABA will have two sanctioned events  at the Benton County Fair  at the  rodeo. The events will be on Friday and Saturday nights  in Camden,TN.Come out  and spend Labor Day Weekend enjoying both the fair and the ABA.

August 25

The American Bullriding Association In July

The American Bullriding Association’s Latest Results

The Littrell Clan of Circle 13 Rodeo Company put on a great two day event at Circle 13 on July 14th and 15th.Quite a few of us camped out there overnight and we had a great time. Melissa Perez and I had the grills running while we cooked up several types of Chicken, a venison roast, sweet corn and more. Just a real fun time.

The event rodeo clown was Mike Russell and he always keeps all of us laughing. His son Dusty did a Jr bull riding exhibition and this boy has talent. He might have come down early but our bull (CWR Bucking Bulls) Blue Norther was a good match for Dusty. as Blue took two big leaps out of the chute  with lots of rear and drop, high kicking and  a twist. Dusty was happy and watch out for him. This is a future World Champion. He’s got heart.

The first of the competition riders to come out was Matt Littrell aboard Circle 13’s 180 Beavis who took one leap out then faked left, faked right and kept changing direction as he hop, skipped and jumped across the arena. Matt came down hard on the dismount, hurting his wrist but he scored 74  and was second in the round.

The judge for the event were Johnny Bird and Shane Adams.

JM Cox drew Circle 13’s Buzzard Bait who exploded out and had JM in the dirt on the third leap. It looked like Jessie Perez was going to make a good ride aboard another good Circle 13 bull, White Demon when the bull pulled Jessie down in front causing Jessie to slap the bull. I spoke with Matt Littrell and he told me it was not his wrist that he injured but his shoulder. A true cowboy, Matt said” It kind of pushed my shoulder out of socket but its all right now.” Ouch! That’s some kind of pain but that’s some kind of cowboy.

Circle 13 had its eliminators out as 14K Golddigger bucked Mathew White off. Brent Sisco was next on Circle 13’s A10 Rimshot who walked out of the chute then faked left and faked right with energy to get Brent down early. This is one mean bull!

Altus Dieterlen drew CWR’s TN Two Hawks who didn’t have his normal trip but bucked in a wide circle to the left then faked right and left.  Altus, who finished fourth in the round scored 65, ending Two Hawks’ unridden streak. The #1 rider in the ABA, former PBR Finals qualifier Shawn Turner drew Marv Littrell’s 49% Marvelous Marv who took one leap straight out before spinning to the right. He jumped out of the spin then faked left. Shawn scored 80 to lead the round. I am glad to say Corey Bailey is ok after his wreck aboard Copenhagen Drifter who exploded out with lots of rear and drop and high kicks. Drifter threw Corey into the chute gate as he bucked him off.

During intermission there was a banana eating contest and barrel racing.

The action resumed with Buck Friskillo aboard CWR’s Cat Five Hurricane who power bucked straight before reversing to the left. Buck scored 64 while finishing fifth in the long go.

Colby Criswell lost hold when Circle 13’s 54 Super Dave jumped out of a fast right spin. Circle 13’s Boo didn’t have his usual trip as he made a wide circle to the left with no kick to it but Zach Jackson stayed centered to score 70 and finish third in the round. Circle 13’s White Knight exploded out then faked left and reversed right to set Jarrett Melton down early. The next rider was Matt McCarley aboard Rafter C’s Macho Man who took one huge leap forward then faked right as matt hit the dirt. Kevin Ables was the final rider in the long go aboard Circle 13’s EG Get You Some who took one leap out with a high kick before turning back to the right close to the chutes to get Kevin off.

Altus Dieterlen was unable to ride in the short go as his knee was injured when he dismounted Two Hawks. Mathew McCarley was drawn back to take Altus’ place.

Zack Jackson who also rides for UT Martin was the first one out. He drew Rafter C’s Krazy Kat who had lots of kick as he took one leap out then one spin to the right before reversing and bucking straight left. Zack came down before the buzzer but finished third with his long go score of 70. Circle 13’s Full House came out with a vengeance as he took two huge leaps forward with lots of power and high kicking to set Matt McCarley down early. Shawn Turner was given the option of a reride when Denmark Biggs faked left then faked right before turning back right and stopping then went back to bucking left. Shawn scored 72 and kept the score giving him 152 on two. Rafter C’s Spin To Win hipped himself as he bucked with no kicks but managed to unseat Buck Friskillo early. The bull was scheduled to buck on Sunday also but Guy said he was hurt and at his age it was time for him to retire to breeding. Buck finished fourth with his score of 64 on Cat Five Hurricane. It just wasn’t Matt Littrell’s night as Rafter C’s Intimidator bucked in the chute and matt had to be pulled out twice. Another cowboy would have called for a reride but not Matt. Even with the bull hurting Matt’s leg, Matt was determined to get out on him. Finally he did but got yanked forward and slapped the bull. Matt was second with his score of 74 from the long go.

After the event we headed back up to the campsites for a fun night of good food and good company.

On Sunday Dusty Russell did his exhibition on CWR’s MM’s TN Twister who took one leap out then a right spin with lots of kick then jumped out of the spin and bucked left throwing in a belly roll. Dusty hung on and he actually had the high score though not a carded rider as the judges (Josh Russell and Johnny Byrd) scored him at 80.

It was great to see Wes Cryer there. Wes was the first one to ever mount our first two bulls TN Tornado and Dairy Queen Bob-O. Wes is a good rider and also like Matt and Brent can double as a bullfighter. Wes drew Boo, who took 4 leaps straight before turning right and nearly came through the fence, I didn’t have a day sheet so if I mess up a name or two maybe the riders will forgive me. Bear Creek’s Shorty B was not his usual self though he bucked Blake Climor off as he took one jump forward then took one spin to the left. It was a bulls’ day as even Ronnie Maness came down early. The first qualified ride was J.M. Cox aboard 49% Marvelous Marv who loped out, bucking straight to the left, turned back right in a straight line then reversed straight left. JM scored 75 for second place in the long go. Next to go was Altus Dieterlen aboard CWR’s Two Hawks who bucked while kicking straight left then faked right then faked left. Altus scored 67 and was sixth in the round. A lot of the riders who made it here f or Sunday had been at the Gulfport, MS PBR event on Saturday night so you know they had to be tired. Tye Allen finished fourth down there but only made it to 7.98 on the official time clock on Circle 13’s White Knight..

Corey Bailey scored 80 on P1 Prince Albert, another great Circle 13 bull to lead the long go. Although he bucked straight left all the way to the left fencing Prince Albert was a handful as he power bucked. This bull is always exciting.

Matthew McCarley drew 54 Super Dave who took two leaps straight left then reversed right with a hop, skip and jump. Matt scored 71 tying with Jessie Perez for 4th place. Trey Allen drew Cat Five Hurricane who power bucked straight down the arena before turning left. Trey scored 73 to finish third in the long go.

Jessie Perez made his fourth place ride aboard 13X Joker’s Wild who faked left then circled right in a wide circle while Jessie maintained perfect position; remaining in complete control.

Trey Allen hurt his leg in the short go as he came down off of Full House early. Trey ended up in third place for the event. Buzzard bait took 4 leaps to the left   and JM Cox lost his rope but finished in second place with his long go score of 75.

Jessie Perez looked like a helicopter as Krazy Kat spun hard to the left and sent Jessie spinning off. Jessie remained tied with Matt McCarley who bucked off Rafter C’s Intimidator.  Corey Bailey drew Circle 13’s Jordan’s Pet who exploded out of the chute with lots of kick then faked left and right. Corey looked great and remained centered while scoring 83 to give him the win with163 on two

All in all it was another great event at the Circle 13. Don’t forget to attend their next two-day event on August 25th and 26th.

July was rounded out by the July 28th event put on by Rafter C’s Guy Cox at the annual Good Luck Fire Dept. Rodeo in Rutherford, TN. We didn’t make the event but I heard it was a packed house. Jessie Perez and Matt White had the only qualified rides in the event. Jessie rode P&M’s 23 Flatliner for 72 points to finish second in the event. Matt White rode Rafter C’s Krazy Kat for 74 points to get the win. If you can make sure you get over to Circle 13 on the 25th and 26th of August for the two day event. Don’t forget to check the ABA site for the rest of the schedule.

For those of you wanting to ride at a practice pen don’t forget there is one every Thursday at Circle 13 in Denmark, TN.

Bull Riding Re-Caps And News

Current Bull Riding News

Congratulations to PBR's Ross Coleman on his July marriage to long time girl friend Amy.Wish you and your pretty bride well,Ross.

Please say a prayer for CBR/PRCA's Tag Elliott who   was injured at the Days of '47 Rodeo on July 24th. Like Tuff Hedeman did after his head on with Bodacious ,Tag underwent 10 hours  of reconstructive surgery after  his head and Werewolf's collided. He was ko'd  while suffering broken facial, cheek, eye orbital  bones along with breaking both jaws. Not a good way to celebrate  your  19th birthday.Tag was 19 on July 22nd. Tag was placed in a medically induced coma for the surgery and  the good news is that neurological tests are normal.

Tag had been second in the College National Finals Rodeo this year; and won the ProRodeo Tour event in Tucson,Arizona in February. Get well  Tag.

Welcome Home Lee Akin

Lee Akin has  been able to return home after several surgeries and months of extensive rehabilitation. The  PBR/PRCA  bull rider will undergo more  physical and speech therapy from his home in Weatherford,Oklahoma .According to Cody Custer lee has even been singing the ABC’s with daughter Jada and talking a storm although most of the speech is incoherent. Lee knows what he is trying to say but the words are still coming  out jumbled. All of us who know Lee are thrilled at his progress as he is returning from an injury that would have killed many another riders. Let’s keep the prayers going please.

The ABA at Circle 13 – June 30th

It was another exciting event at Circle 13.Once again we had really rank bulls against some of the best young riders. Matt Littrell started the night off aboard Circle 13’s Prince Albert and its no shame to come down early from this rank bull. Prince Albert took two huge leaps straight to the left and jerked Matt forward causing him to slap the bull. Matt jumped off and then got ready to continue the event as one of the ABA’s top bullfighters. Like the CBR’s Matt Baldwin, Matt Littrell handles both positions well. Just a postscript here for those of you who might want to become a top bullfighter, Matt Baldwin honed his talents riding and bullfighting at Circle 13 several summers ago. If you want to learn things the right way see Scott and Matt Littrell. They sure can teach you how to ride and /or be a bullfighter.

Intercollegiate champion Jon Roberts drew one of my favorite Circle 13 bulls Super Dave 1, a good spinner. The bull took one leap out then went into a right spin then jumped out of it and had Jon down early.  PBR Finals Qualifier from the late nineties, Shawn Turner drew C W’s White Lightning who took two leaps straight out before going into a slow left spin away from Shawn’s hand with lots of elevation including leaps with all fours off of the ground. Shawn scored 78 and was headed to the short go.

Buck Friskillo was next to ride and he drew Marvin Littrell’s 49% Marvelous Marv who had a bad trip as he faked right and left with barely any kick and then bucked in place to unseat Buck. Circle 13’s White Demon took two long leaps out then faked left, faked right and faked left again to unseat bullfighter Brent Sisco. Colby Criswell went flying off of the explosive 14K Golddigger (Circle 13) as the bull exploded out of the chute then faked left and right several times with power. Rodeo Clown Mike Russell kept the audience laughing during breaks as he picked on Scott Littrell and others including my husband Norman in a cute little skit. Mike began by making a list of people he was going to “whoop” and finally he challenged my husband Norman to a fight in the arena during a break. Norman went out there and he was clowning around and really hamming it up. Scott kept telling Mike he would not be able to whoop Norman, a former navy Seal but Mike kept challenging until Scott and Brent came in to back Norman up and suddenly it was the Indians against the lone white man as they pulled their cowboy hats off to reveal their Mohawks and they all let out their war whoops. The crowd roared as Mike booked it out of the arena. We were all letting out the war whoops as many of us as is the norm in about all rodeo/bull-riding events are of American Indian descent. After all the first real cowboys were Indians who were trained by the Spaniards to herd their cattle.

The next rider up was Mike’s son Josh Russell who drew Circle 13’s Joker’s Wild who took two huge leaps out then faked left hard to make Josh hit the ground. Matt Smith drew Circle 13’s Boo who didn’t have his normal trip, as he faked left then bucked straight down the arena before circling to the left with not much kick. Matt scored 71.

J.M. Cox drew my (CWR Bucking Bulls) bull TN Two Hawks who power bucked with speed as he circled to the left with his high kicks. This was the first time he has ever been rode and the score was 72.Normally he has the rider off by the fourth leap. PBR lower tier rider Altus Dieterlen drew Circle 13’s Beavis who faked left then bucked in place to get Altus down early.D.L.Goodman drew CW Ranch’s (that’s Craig Whitman Ranch not to be confused with our CWR [Cherokee Wolf Ranch]) Black Chief who took two leaps straight out then circled left to get D.L. down. We had a lot of Matt’s there, as the next to ride was NABA World Champion Matthew White aboard Circle 13’s Rimshot. The bull walked out then took two good bucking leaps before faking left then circled left alternating kick with no kick making for a harder ride. Matt scored 75.

He was followed by Zack Jackson aboard CW’s Chief Page who spun to the right away from Zach’s hand then stopped at 7 seconds and went back to bucking at 7.9. Somehow Zach scored a 79 for the ride, which I would have scored lower because of the bull stopping when he did. Zach was in complete control though.

Matt McCarley drew one of my favorite Circle 13 bulls, TNT Dynamite. I love these white spotted Plummers and Dynamite makes me think of the late Freddy Cordell’s J.D.’s Happy Hour. Unfortunately Dynamite didn’t have his normal trip and he just hop, skipped and jumped straight left but Matt scored 72. Chris Stackler drew our bull Cat Five Hurricane and was off by the fifth high kicking jump. Kevin Ables drew Circle 13’s Jordan’s Pet and was in the dirt right out of the chute as the bull put the power to him.

Jessie Perez drew Circle 13’s White Lightning who took one leap out then made a fast, sharp left turn with rear and drop and high kicks before reversing to the right to buck Jessie off. It’s no shame to come down from a great bull like this one. Now come on guys. We have Super Dave 1 and Super Dave II and now there is Beavis and Beavis 2nd.I guess it’s the George Forman trend with his sons named George 2,George 3,etc. Jarrett Melton scored 83 to take the lead when he made a great ride aboard Circle 13’s Beavis 2nd, who put some power to the hop, skip and jump trip he had before going into a fast left spin with lots of action. Jarrett, like Jessie Perez and so many others makes a point of riding at Circle 13’s practice pen on Thursday nights even when he has a two-day event on the weekend.

Super Dave 2 took one leap out before going into his fast right spin to put Shaun Mehling down early. Corey Bailey was the last rider and he scored 74 aboard Circle 13’s EG Get You Some who ran out of the chute faked left then hop, skipped and jumped straight left.

In the short go the first rider up was Matthew White aboard CW Ranch’s Big Show not to be confused with the bull of the same name you see on television. So many bulls carry the same or similar names that the only way you know who is who is normally by their number and the contractor’s name. This bull took 5 leaps straight out before spinning to the left with kick and action. Matthew scored 85 and had 160 on two head.

Zach Jackson drew Circle 13’s Buzzard Bait who took a leap straight out then circled left with high kicks and lots of power. Zach scored 79 and had 158 on two. Jarrett Melton drew Circle 13’s Full House, an 8 year old who still has it. Its no shame to come down from his as he exploded out of the chute faking left and right with power. Shawn Turner drew Denmark Biggs who turned back to the chute then jumped out of it and faked left then spun to the left with lots of action away from Shawn’s hand. Shawn scored 87 and took the lead with 165 on two head. Corey Bailey drew Circle 13’s Copenhagen Drifter, another of Scott’s explosive bulls. Even in the heat Drifter never has a bad trip. He blew out of the chute with super high kicks, took one left spin into Corey’s hand then jumped out of it and bucked straight with lots of kick and action. Corey scored 83 and finished with 158 points on two.

Shawn Turner won the event with 165 points while Matthew White was second with 160 on two. Corey Bailey and Zach Jackson tied at 158 and Jarrett Melton who won the long go was fifth. The next ABA event will be at Circle 13 on July 14th and 15th. Don’t forget to check the website for upcoming events and try and make it to the Thursday night Practice Pen and Futurities.
